The Female Wood Carrier

In those days, the king of Baranasi had a trip. He fell in love with female wood carrier and made love with her.

Before the king went back to the palace, he gave her a ring, and said “If you get pregnant and have a daughter, sell this ring for a living. If you have a son, bring him with this ring to me. I’ll choose you as the queen.”

The wood carrier finally had a son. When the boy was about five years old, her brought him to see the king at the throne hall.

She said “I brought your son to you as you ordered.”

With shame, the king said “I don’t know anything about this.”

Therefore, she told all the story. However, the king still insisted “This ring is not mine, this boy is not mine also.”

Utterly repressed, she thought that she has no witness or evidence, she had only truth; so she prayed “All gods who are clairvoyant, please be witnesses for me. When I throw the boy into the air; if this boy is not a son of the king, may he fell down and die; if this boy is a son of the king, may he float in the air.” and then throw her son high into the air.

After being thrown, the boy was amazingly sitting in the air. Whoever called, he didn’t come down. The king tried to called the boy, he slowly came down and sat on the king’s lap. Hence, the king accepted that the boy was his son and assigned the boy as the crown prince, and the wood carrier as the queen.

The boy finally reincarnated as the Buddha.
