Mahissasa then longly explained many aspects of shame of sins.

After the explanation had ended, the water demon offered “Look, noble man. I’m admired you. I I’ll release one of your brother. Please choose which one you want.”

“So please give me my youngest brother.” Mahissasa said.

“Look, noble man. You only know Deva Dharma. You don’t follow it.”

“Why ?”

“Choosing the youngest brother means that you don’t care about the most civilized people.” The water demon replied.

“Look, water demon, I know and has followed Deva Dharma.” Mahissasa explained, “Mother of my youngest brother asked our father for the throne but our father don’t allow. For our safety, our father let us leave the country but my youngest brother followed us. If I said that water demon has eaten my youngest brother, no one would believe. I’m afraid of critic, so I choose my youngest brother.”

“That’s actually good, noble man.” The water demon said, “You know Deva Dharma and follow it.” and then released all two brothers.

Mahissasa said to water demon “My friend, you was born as an ogre, eat flesh and blood of others as food. The people was eaten because they had committed sins in their previous life. Why do you still commit such sins ? Sins won’t let you get away from hell. From now on, you should stop committing sins and make good merit.”

At last, three boys and one water demon lived together in the forest for some period.

One day, Mahissasa knew that his father had passed away. Mahissasa, Chanta, Suriya and the water demon went back to Varanasi. They seized the throne and ruled the country with virtues.

The water demon finally reincarnated as the new monk who had many robes and clothes. Suriya finally reincarnated as Anon, a famous high priest. Chanta finally reincarnated as Saribudra, another famous high priest. Mahissasa finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

The water demon saw that Mahissasa didn’t went into the pond, so it impersonated a worker. It said to Mahissasa, “Tired people, why don’t you go down into this pond, take a bath, drink water, and eat some lotus rootstock ?”

Mahissasa knew that it actually was a water demon. He asked “You’ve caught my brothers, didn’t you ?”

“Yes, I did” The water demon accepted.

“Why did you do that ?” Mahissasa asked.

“I have permission to eat all people who enter this pond.” The water demon replied.

“All people ?”

“All people, except the ones who know Deva Dharma.”

“You really want to know Deva Dharma ?” Mahissasa questioned.

“Yes, I do” The water demon replied.

“So, I’ll tell you what Deva Dharma is.” Mahissasa offered.

“Then tell me, I’m waiting for that.”

“However, my body is now too dirty for explaning Deva Dharma. May I take a bath in this pond and drink some water ?” Mahissasa requested.

“Take your time.” The water demon said.

After taking a bath and drinking some water, Mahissasa sat on the chair prepared by the water demon. The water demon was sitting on the ground.

“Please listen to Deva Dharma respectfully,” Mahissasa began, “Calm churchman who have shame of sins and be moral was called the man who have Deva Dharma.”

[Continued from the previous part]

In those days, there was a king of Varanasi named Phrommadatta. His queen had a son named Mahissasa. One of his concubine also gave a birth to a son named Chanta.

When the queen passed away, he appointed his most favourite concubine as a new queen. The new queen also had a son named Suriya. At the time Suriya was born, the king said to his queen that he will give anything she want as gift fore the new child. The queen replied that she would ask him when she want.

When Suriya grew up, the new queen told the king “When I gave a birth to Suriya, you said that you will give anything I want. Now I beg that you give the throne to my son please.”

The king discouraged “My first two sons are already shining. I can’t give the throne to your son.”

However, the queen still begged the king for many times. He thought that the queen may had malice against his first two sons. He called his first two sons and ordered his two sons to went away from the country for their safety.

Suriya was playing at the royal courtyard and saw his brothers were going. Because they were familiar, Suriya also followed his two brothers. Therefore, three boys were traveling together and they are heading to Himmapan forest.

After traveling for a while, they stopped and had a rest under a big tree. The eldest brother, Mahissasa, said to Suriya “Suriya, please go to that pond, take a bath and bring us some water to drink.”

Unfortunately, the pond was owned by a water demon. The water demon had a permission from Vessawan, the king of ogres, to eat all people who went into the pond except the people who know Deva Dharma (Dharma of god).

Not knowing that the pond was owned by a water demon, Suriya went into the pond and was caught by the water demon. The water demon asked “Do you know Deva Dharma ?”

“I know,” Suriya said, “The moon and the sun are Deva Dharma !”

“You don’t know Deva Dharma.” The water demon said and brought Suriya to it’s place.

Feeling that Suriya left too long, Mahissasa sent out Chanta to find Suriya.

Chanta went to the pond and found the water demon. The water demon asked “Do you know Deva Dharma ?”

“Yes, I know,” Chanta said, “The north, the south, the east and the west are Deva Dharma.”

“You don’t know Deva Dhama.” The water demon said and brought Suriya to it’s place.

After a while, Mahissasa feel that there may be something wrong, so he went to the pond by himself. He noticed footsteps of his two brothers and thought that the pond may be owned by a demon. He armed his bow and stood there.

In those days, there was a water demon living in a lotus pond. It had eaten many humans and animals that went into the pond.

One day, there was a group of monkeys, which had about eighty thousand monkeys. This group was leaded by a great monkey.

The great monkey said to all monkeys “Normally, in a big forest, there was some poison plants. Same as ponds, they usually owned by water demons. When you find any fruit you never eat or pond you never went into, you must tell me first.”

Some monkeys arrived at the pond and waited for the great monkey. When the great monkey arrived, he asked “Why didn’t you go down into the pond ?”

“We are waiting for you.” the monkeys replied.

“That’s good.” the great monkey said and looked around the pond.

Found that there were only footsteps that head down into the pond, he said “This pond was owned by a water demon. Each of you should find a reed grass for drinking water.”

Because of this, all monkeys were safe from a water demon.

The water demon finally reincarnated as Devadatta. The great monkey finally reincarnated as the Buddha.
