When they arrived at Jetawan temple, female monks paid homage to the Buddha and told all the story to the Buddha.

The Buddha knew that the pregnant monk got pregnant before she became a monk. However, the Buddha realized that people from other religions would have a chance to blame the Buddha that he pick up a woman that Devadatta left. To avoid the problem, the Buddha thought that this case should be judged among many creditible persons including the king.

On the next morning, the Buddha invited Kosol the king, Anathabindika the millionaire, Julaanathabindika the millionaire, Wisaka the great laywoman, and many people from famous families to have a meeting. At dusk, when all people arrived at the meeting, the Buddha called Ubalee, a senior monk who was expert on Buddhist regulation, and said “Go to judge this pregnant monk among all people.”

Ubalee, a senior monk, sat on his chair and called Wisaka to be in front of the king and said “Wisaka, please diagnose this pregnant monk to see when she got pregnant.”

Wisaka examined the pregnant monk’s body, calculated and told Ubalee that the pregnant monk got pregnant before she became a monk. So that the judge had been made. Many months passed, the pregnant monk finally delivered a baby.

One day, the king traveled near the house of the female monks and heard a sound of the baby, so he asked his councilor. The councilor told that the pregnant monk had delivered a baby.

The king said “Taking care of baby is female monks’ worry. I’ll take care that baby.”

[To be continued ...]

While some monks was talking about the Buddha’s priesthood, the Buddha said “I’ve not only become a priest in this life.” The monks asked the Buddha to reveal this story, so the Buddha told his story as follows:

In those days, there was a king named Makadeva, who ruled the throne morally. One day, he called his barber and said “My barber, whenever you see my white hair, please tell me.”

Year passed, the barber saw one white hair on the king’s head. Therefore, he told the king as ordered “My majesty, you have one white hair.”

“My friend, please pull out that hair and put in my hand.” the king ordered.

The barber used a golden tweezer to pull out the white hair and placed down on the king’s hand.

When the king saw white hair, although the king is not old, he felt that the death is coming. He thought “Silly Makadeva, you never think of renouncing desires until you have white hair.” and decided to renounce his worldly life on that day.

He called his eldest son and ordered “Look, my son, I have a white hair. I’m an old man now. I have had enough worldly happiness. I’ll search for divine happiness. It’s time for me to become a priest. May you reign the throne. I’ll practice in Makadeva garden.”

Royal followers asked the king “My majesty, what is your reason to become a priest ?”

“My white hair appears. Deity appears. This is the time for being a priest.” The king replied.

The king became a priest on that day and kept practicing in the garden. After he passed away, he was born in the realm of Brahman. After that he was born as the king in the same country and became a priest in the garden again. After passed away, he was born in the realm of Brahman again.

The barber finally reincarnated as Anon, a famous Buddhist saint. The eldest son of the king finally reincarnated as Rahul, the son of the Buddha. The king finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

The wood cutter said “My majesty, I have no other witness or evidence except the truth. I will throw my son into the air. If this boy is your son, may he float in the air. But if this boy isn’t your son, may he fell to death on the ground.” then she grabbed two feet of her son and threw the boy into the air.

The boy miraculously sat in the air and said to the king “My great king, I’m your son. Please fostered me. You have fostered many people, why don’t you foster your own son ?”

The king accepted and said “Come here, my son.”

The boy came down and sat on the king’s lap. The king appointed the son as a viceroy and appointed the wood cutter as the queen.

[Continued from the previous part]

In those days, there was a king of Varanasi named Phrommadatta. His queen had a son named Mahissasa. One of his concubine also gave a birth to a son named Chanta.

When the queen passed away, he appointed his most favourite concubine as a new queen. The new queen also had a son named Suriya. At the time Suriya was born, the king said to his queen that he will give anything she want as gift fore the new child. The queen replied that she would ask him when she want.

When Suriya grew up, the new queen told the king “When I gave a birth to Suriya, you said that you will give anything I want. Now I beg that you give the throne to my son please.”

The king discouraged “My first two sons are already shining. I can’t give the throne to your son.”

However, the queen still begged the king for many times. He thought that the queen may had malice against his first two sons. He called his first two sons and ordered his two sons to went away from the country for their safety.

Suriya was playing at the royal courtyard and saw his brothers were going. Because they were familiar, Suriya also followed his two brothers. Therefore, three boys were traveling together and they are heading to Himmapan forest.

After traveling for a while, they stopped and had a rest under a big tree. The eldest brother, Mahissasa, said to Suriya “Suriya, please go to that pond, take a bath and bring us some water to drink.”

Unfortunately, the pond was owned by a water demon. The water demon had a permission from Vessawan, the king of ogres, to eat all people who went into the pond except the people who know Deva Dharma (Dharma of god).

Not knowing that the pond was owned by a water demon, Suriya went into the pond and was caught by the water demon. The water demon asked “Do you know Deva Dharma ?”

“I know,” Suriya said, “The moon and the sun are Deva Dharma !”

“You don’t know Deva Dharma.” The water demon said and brought Suriya to it’s place.

Feeling that Suriya left too long, Mahissasa sent out Chanta to find Suriya.

Chanta went to the pond and found the water demon. The water demon asked “Do you know Deva Dharma ?”

“Yes, I know,” Chanta said, “The north, the south, the east and the west are Deva Dharma.”

“You don’t know Deva Dhama.” The water demon said and brought Suriya to it’s place.

After a while, Mahissasa feel that there may be something wrong, so he went to the pond by himself. He noticed footsteps of his two brothers and thought that the pond may be owned by a demon. He armed his bow and stood there.

In those days, there was a royal appraiser. He worked for the king of Varanasi. He expert on estimating value of elephants and horses.

However, the king was so stingy. He thought “If this appraiser still does his work, the royal asset will be exhausted. I’ll look for another man to do this job instead.” and then he looked around the palace court and found a villager. The king ordered his courtier to called the villager.

When the villager arrived, the king asked “Will you be my royal appraiser ?”

That man replied “Yes, sir.”

Then, the king appointed that man as a new royal appraiser.

From that day, the new royal appraiser appraised things haphazardly. But because of his position, his word is a final price.

One day, a merchant brought five hundred horses to the palace. The new royal appraiser estimated all horses at one liter of rice. Then he gave a merchant one liter of rice and brought all horses to the royal stable.

The merchant didn’t know what to do. He went to the old royal appraiser and asked what he should do. The old royal appriaser told the merchant to bribe the new royal appraiser to estimate the value of one liter of rice as agreed.

After that, the merchant, the old royal appraiser, along with the new royal appraiser, went to the throne hall. The king and many courtiers are already there.

The merchant asked the king “My majesty, I heard that five hundreds horses worth at one liter of rice. But how much one liter of rice worth ?”

The king said to the new royal appraiser “My appraiser, how much five hundreds horses worth ?”

The new royal appraiser replied “They worth one liter of rice, sir.”

The king continued asking “Okay, all horses worth one liter of rice, so how much one liter of rice worth ?”

The new royal appraiser replied “It worth Varanasi, sir.”

The old royal appraiser said “How much one liter of rice worth ? How much Varanasi worth ? One liter of rice is equal to five hundreds horses ?”

Courtiers laughed and said “We thought that Varanasi is priceless. We just know that Varanasi, with the throne and a big beautiful palace worth only one liter of rice. You are the most suitable appraiser for our king.”

With shame, the king fired the new royal appraiser and gave the old royal appraiser his position back.

The old royal appraiser finally reincarnated as the Buddha. The new royal appraiser finally reincarnated as a stupid monk who made chaos between monks.

In those days, there were two groups of hog deer, one was leaded by Nikroth and one was leaded by Saka.

Unfortunately, the king was much addicted to hunting for hog deer so followers couldn’t do anything except following him in the jungle. To safe time, followers has fenced out a small jungle and herded numbers of hog deer into the jungle for the king to easily hunt hog deers.

The king sometimes went to hunt a hog deer by himself; sometimes he ordered a chef to hunt a hog deer for him. Everytime they were hunted, there was a chaos in hog deers and it was problem for old hog deers, pregnant hog deers, and nursing mother hog deers.

Therefore, Nikroth and Saka agreed that everyday they should alternately select one hog deer from their group and get him or her to wait for being hunted in the appointed area.

One day, it was a turn for a hog deer that was far gone in pregnancy. She begged Saka that let her give a birth to her child before being killed. Saka had rejected her request, so she went to see Nikroth and ask him to save her baby. Nikroth said that he would be a prey for that day instead.

Nikroth went to the appointed area and laid down waiting to be hunted. When the time for hunting had arrived, because Nikroth was a king of hog deer, a chef didn’t dare to shoot him. The chef went back and told the king about this.

After a while, the king came to the jungle and asked Nikroth “Why did you lay down here ?”

Nikroth replied “I’m here because today it’s actually a turn of a pregnant hog deer. She is so pity. I can’t let her to be killed.”

Being sorrowful, the king said “From today, I’ll stop killing animal.” and ordered his followers to free all animals in the jungle.

Saka finally reincarnated as Devadatta. Nikroth finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

Moral: Leaders shouldn’t abandon followers while having a hard time.

In those days, the king of Baranasi had a trip. He fell in love with female wood carrier and made love with her.

Before the king went back to the palace, he gave her a ring, and said “If you get pregnant and have a daughter, sell this ring for a living. If you have a son, bring him with this ring to me. I’ll choose you as the queen.”

The wood carrier finally had a son. When the boy was about five years old, her brought him to see the king at the throne hall.

She said “I brought your son to you as you ordered.”

With shame, the king said “I don’t know anything about this.”

Therefore, she told all the story. However, the king still insisted “This ring is not mine, this boy is not mine also.”

Utterly repressed, she thought that she has no witness or evidence, she had only truth; so she prayed “All gods who are clairvoyant, please be witnesses for me. When I throw the boy into the air; if this boy is not a son of the king, may he fell down and die; if this boy is a son of the king, may he float in the air.” and then throw her son high into the air.

After being thrown, the boy was amazingly sitting in the air. Whoever called, he didn’t come down. The king tried to called the boy, he slowly came down and sat on the king’s lap. Hence, the king accepted that the boy was his son and assigned the boy as the crown prince, and the wood carrier as the queen.

The boy finally reincarnated as the Buddha.
