In those days, there was a Brahmin who was born in high rank family. He realized the disadvantage of desires so he renounced his position, went into Himmapan forest to become a hermit and practice meditation. After he had succeeded the highest level of meditation, he accepted many disciples until he had five hundreds disciples.

In the rainy season, he with five hundreds disciples arrived at Varanasi and was welcomed by the king of Varanasi. The king offered the hermit master and his disciples to be in the royal garden.

At the end of rainy season, the hermit bid farewell to the king. The king asked “My noble, you’re old. It’s not good for you to be in Himmapan forest. You should send your disciples to Himmapan forest and stay here.”

The hermit master accepted and sent all his disciples to Himmapan forest and he was stay in the royal garden.

Among the five hundred disciples, there was one leader. He had ever been a king before becoming a hermit and he also succeeded the highest level of meditation.

The leader wanted to see his master, he said to all disciples “I’ll go to see the master. Don’t be annoyed. Please be here. I’ll come back when I had seen the master.” Then, he left Himmapan forest and headed for the royal garden. After he had met the hermit master, the leader laid himself in the hermit master’s place.

The king thought that he should go to see the hermit master, so he went to the royal garden and paid respect to the hermit master.

Although the leader saw the king, the leader didn’t stand up and greet the king. The leader still laid down and exclaimed “So happy, So happy !”

The king felt neglected so he said to the hermit master “This hermit must be full of food so he didn’t stand up.”

“My majesty, this hermit had ever been a king like you. He thought that when he was the king he still had not much happiness like this,” the hermit master explained, “One who looks after no one and be looked after by no one usually be happy.”

The king was glad with the hermit master’s words. He bid farewell to the hermit master and went back to his place.

The leader finally reincarnated as Pattiyadera, a Buddhist saint. The hermit master finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

After Anomadassi Buddha, there was a new Buddha named Paduma. One day, while Paduma Buddha was meditating in the forest, a lion saw him and was deeply admired by his manner. The lion payed homage to him, and looked at Paduma Buddha for seven days without going out to find foods.

When Paduma Buddha finished his meditation, he saw the lion and foretold that the lion would be Gautama Buddha in the future.

After Kuandinya Buddha abandoned his earthly body about one eon, there was a Buddha named Mangala.

In those days, our most recent Buddha was a Brahmin named Suruji. He went to see Mangala Buddha and invited Mangala Buddha, “My noble Buddha, tomorrow, could you and your disciples stay at my place, please?”

Mangala Buddha asked “So, how many monks do you want to invite?”

Suruji asked “My noble Buddha, how many monks do you have?”

Mangala Buddha replied “I have about one million millions monks.”

Suruji asked “My noble Buddha, I may invite you with all of your disciples to my place. Could you come to my place?”

“Sure, Brahmin” Mangala Buddha replied.

After Suruji arrived at his home, he thought “I can provide food and clothes for all guests; but ! how about trabeated house and seats?”

His thoughtfulness heated up the throne of Devaraj, the king of gods. Devaraj wondered who made this. He used his insight and found that Suruji had invited Mangala Buddha. Devaraj thought that he should make merit also, so he disguised himself as a woodsmith holding knife and axe, then appeared in front of Suruji.

“Anyone want to hire me?” Devaraj asked.

“What can you do?” Suruji asked.

“There is nothing about art that I don’t know,” Devaraj replied. “No matter what job I’ve been hired for, even a house or a temple, I know how to complete it.”

“Great ! I have a job for you.” Suruji said.

“So, what is your job ?” Devaraj asked.

“I have invited a million millions monks to our home,” replied Suruji. “Could you build trabeated house and seats for all of them ?”

“Yes, I can !” Devaraj replied.

“Great ! I hire you” Suruji said.

After that, Devaraj found a plain land which was big enough for building trabeated houses. He used his magical power to create a big beautiful trabeated crystal house. Then he use his magic to create a million millions seats and a millions millions boilers for all monks. When he finished, he walked to Suruji’s house and said “Brahmin ! Take a look ! I’ve finished my work.”

When Suruji saw beautiful trabeated house, he was much delighted. He thought “For this beautiful house, inviting the Buddha and all his disciples for only one day is not enough; I should invite them for one week.”

On the last day, Mangala Buddha thought that “This Brahmin has made a great alms, what will he be in next lives ?” He used his insight and saw that in two eons and one hundred thousand millions years, Suruji would be a Buddha named Guatama. So he called Suruji and told him.

Suruji thought that it was worthless being a layman if he would be a Buddha in the future. So he devoted into Mangala Buddha’s religious. After he had passed away, he was reborn in the realm of Brahman.

Very long long time ago, there was a city named Amorn. This city is very beautiful and abundant so that we could call it a city of angels.

In this city, there was a young brahmin named Sumedha. He was in a rich family, so he didn’t need to work, he had only to study brahman.

After his parent had passed away, a family accountant brought out the family account and opened a treasury room, which is full of gold, silver, jewels and other precious things.

The accountant reported him about assets and told him “These all assets are yours.”

Sumedha thought “My grandfather had collected much assets; but when he passed away, he can’t bring any piece of gold with him.” He decided to donated all his possessions to the orphant and the poor, and then left the city by himself.

He built a hermitage on a mountain in Himmapan forest, and lived there primitively as a hermit. He did a practice and finally attained some success. He enjoyed the highest happiness so much that he couldn’t hear the quake of all world elements caused by the enlightment eons of Dipankara Buddha, the Buddha prior to our most recent Buddha.

One day, Dipankara Buddha was stay in the Ramma city. Heard that Dipankara Buddha was stay there, a large number of citizens brought foods, clothes, incenses, flowers, and others gratuities to offer to Dipankara Buddha. Some citizens decorated roads with beautiful sand, some sprinkled popped rice and corolla.

At that time, Sumedha was flying over the city and noticed the joyfulness of the citizens. With curiosity, he came down and asked one of the citizen “Noble man, could you tell me whom you decorate road for?”

The citizen replied “Don’t you know that our Dipankara Buddha, who have attained enlightenment and announced precious Dharma, is stay here. We have invited him so we decorated roads for greeting him.”

With gladness, Sumedha asked “Could I help decorating roads too ?”

“Sure,” the citizen replied.

Knew that Sumedha had magical power, the citizen assigned Sumedha to bring some soil to fill a big muddy hole. Sumedha thought that if he use his magical power, he couldn’t be proud. So he carried soil by his hand.

Unfortunately, Dipankara Buddha arrived when Sumedha hadn’t finished his job. Saw that, Sumedha lay down over the muddy hole, allowing Dipankara Buddha to step over him. While Sumedha was laying on the ground, he thought that it would be useless if he, a strong gentleman, attained nirvana alone, he want to, like Dipankara Buddha, help other people. He had made an intention to be a Buddha, who brings humans and gods cross the river of passions.

Dipankara Buddha noticed Sumedha, sensed Sumedha’s strong intention, so Dipankara Buddha use his insight to see if Sumedha will succeed. After a while, Dipankara Buddha knew that, after four eons and one hundred thousand millions years, Sumedh would be a Buddha named Gautama.

Dipankara Buddha announced his prophecy to the citizens. The citizens are glad that they still have a seed of the Buddha, so if they missed chances to leave the cycles of suffering and rebirth in this life, they still had a chance in next lives. After Dipankara Buddha had gone, citizens offered Sumedha with incenses and flowers.

When citizens was gone, Sumedha sat on his haunches and deliberately thought how he could be a Buddha. At last, he found that he must collect ten virtues: height of generosity, height of precepts, height of devotion, height of wisdom, height of persistence, height of toleration, height of truthfulness, height of faithfulness, height of mercy and height of detachment. While he was finding the way, all world elements was heavily shaking.

With panic, citizens went to see Dipankara Buddha to asked why it happened. Dipankara Buddha said “Don’t be panic, the man who I foretold that he will be the next Buddha, just introspected the required virtues to be a Buddha in the future. With the power of Dharma, all world elements was shaking.”

Heard that, the citizens was cheerful and then brought incenses and flowers, and offered them to Sumedha. When he stood up, all gods blessed him to successfully be the Buddha in one of his next lives.

In those days, there was a brahman master. He ordered his students to catch and kill a sheep for feasting brahmins and donate on behalf of passed away relatives.

After being catched, a sheep laughed and cried. The students asked the sheep “Why did you laughed and cried ?”

The sheep replied “Do you really want to know ? If you want to know, bring me to see your master.”

With curiousity, the students brought the sheep to see their master. The master asked the sheep “Why did you laughed and cried ?”

The sheep replied “In those days, I’ve been a brahman master like you. I killed a sheep and donate on behalf of died relatives. After that, I’ve been beheaded for five hundred lifes. I laughed because my sin will be paid off today. I cried because I take a pity on you that you will receive punishment like me.”

Being scared, the brahman master said that “Mr. sheep, Don’t be scared, I will never kill you.”

“Whether you kill me or not, I will die today.” The sheep said.

The brahman master consoled the sheep, “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from everyone. No one can hurt you.” and then free the sheep.

The brahman master, along with his students, followed the sheep to protect it from being hurt. Minutes later, the sheep raised it’s head up to eat a leaf which is stick to a wall. Suddenly, a thunderbolt stoke the sheep at it’s neck and the sheep was beheaded.

A tree god appeared and said “If you know that birth is a cause of suffering, you shouldn’t kill anyone; because killing suffers others, and you will be punished forever.”

The tree god finally reincarnated as the Buddha.
