One day, when the king of Varanasi came back from the royal garden, his followers accidentally left the royal cart outdoor. In the night, dogs in the palace bite a leather seat, so the cart was completely damaged.

When the king woke up and knew this, he got angry and ordered his followers and his citizens to kill all dogs that were not owned; a lot of dogs were killed.

There was a group of dogs living near a graveyard. This group was leaded by a great dog. The great dog knew that many dogs were killed and he certain that the cart was damaged by the dogs in the palace.

Thought that no one could help dogs, the great dog ran through the graveyard, the city, the king’s followers, and finally laid down under the king’s throne.

After resting for a while, the great dog asked the king “My majesty, I heard that you have ordered to kill dogs. Is this true ?”

“Yes, that’s true,” the king replied.

“Why?” asked the great dog. Then the king explained why he ordered that.

The great dog said “Do you know which dogs have damaged your cart?”

The king replied “I don’t know.”

The great dog asked “Did you ordered to kill all dogs, or have any exception?”

“No, dogs in the palace are exempt from being killed,” replied the king.

The great dog said “If that’s true, you are unfair because you don’t know which dogs have damaged your cart, but you didn’t ordered to kill all dogs; you ordered to kill only not-owned dogs I certain that there were no dogs, except dogs in the palace, that can damage your cart.”

“Can you prove your claim?” asked the king.

“Yes, you just mix oil and grasses, and then force the dogs in the palace to eat.” replied the great dog.

The king ordered his followers to follow the instruction of the great dog. After a while, all dogs in the palace vomited out leathers.

Saw that, the king condoned all dogs, and ordered his followers to feed the great dogs and other dogs everyday.

The king finally reincarnated as Anon, a famous Buddhist saint. The great dog finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

In those days, there was a hunter who built the platform on trees and waiting for shooting hog deers everyday.

One day, while he was on a mango tree, he saw a hog deer standing and observing the tree.

Noticing that, the hunter thrown a mango and then the mango was dropped in front of the hog deer.

Wondering why the mango was dropped too far from the tree, the hog deer looked up and found that there was a hunter on the tree.

The hog deer pretended that it didn’t see the hunter and said “The mango tree ! I know that you throw a mango to deceive me. I will prowl at another place.” and then turned back.

The hunter went down but was unable to catch the hog deer, he said “This time, I missed you.”

The hog deer looked back and said “Even though you missed me this time, but you won’t miss a hell in the next life because you had committed many sins.” and then went away.

When the hunter died, he was born in hell and was suffered for many lives.

The hunter finally reincarnated as Devadatta. The hog deer finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

Moral: If we have commit a sin, although we won’t be punished in this life, we will be punished in the next life or later.

In those days, there was a water demon living in a lotus pond. It had eaten many humans and animals that went into the pond.

One day, there was a group of monkeys, which had about eighty thousand monkeys. This group was leaded by a great monkey.

The great monkey said to all monkeys “Normally, in a big forest, there was some poison plants. Same as ponds, they usually owned by water demons. When you find any fruit you never eat or pond you never went into, you must tell me first.”

Some monkeys arrived at the pond and waited for the great monkey. When the great monkey arrived, he asked “Why didn’t you go down into the pond ?”

“We are waiting for you.” the monkeys replied.

“That’s good.” the great monkey said and looked around the pond.

Found that there were only footsteps that head down into the pond, he said “This pond was owned by a water demon. Each of you should find a reed grass for drinking water.”

Because of this, all monkeys were safe from a water demon.

The water demon finally reincarnated as Devadatta. The great monkey finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

In those days, there was a brahman master. He ordered his students to catch and kill a sheep for feasting brahmins and donate on behalf of passed away relatives.

After being catched, a sheep laughed and cried. The students asked the sheep “Why did you laughed and cried ?”

The sheep replied “Do you really want to know ? If you want to know, bring me to see your master.”

With curiousity, the students brought the sheep to see their master. The master asked the sheep “Why did you laughed and cried ?”

The sheep replied “In those days, I’ve been a brahman master like you. I killed a sheep and donate on behalf of died relatives. After that, I’ve been beheaded for five hundred lifes. I laughed because my sin will be paid off today. I cried because I take a pity on you that you will receive punishment like me.”

Being scared, the brahman master said that “Mr. sheep, Don’t be scared, I will never kill you.”

“Whether you kill me or not, I will die today.” The sheep said.

The brahman master consoled the sheep, “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from everyone. No one can hurt you.” and then free the sheep.

The brahman master, along with his students, followed the sheep to protect it from being hurt. Minutes later, the sheep raised it’s head up to eat a leaf which is stick to a wall. Suddenly, a thunderbolt stoke the sheep at it’s neck and the sheep was beheaded.

A tree god appeared and said “If you know that birth is a cause of suffering, you shouldn’t kill anyone; because killing suffers others, and you will be punished forever.”

The tree god finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

In those days, there were a lion and a tiger living in the same cave. In the winter, they argued that when does coldness come. The lion thought that coldness would come when it’s waxing moon; the tiger thought that coldness would come when it’s waning moon.

To judge who was right, they went to see a hermit. The lion asked “Dear hermit, could you tell us when does coldness come ? I think it comes when the moon is waxing but my friend think that it comes when the moon is waning.”

The hermit replied “For coldness, we can’t know accurately when it comes. When wind comes, coldness comes. Coldness is mostly caused by wind. You’re both wrong.”

In those days, there were two groups of hog deer, one was leaded by Nikroth and one was leaded by Saka.

Unfortunately, the king was much addicted to hunting for hog deer so followers couldn’t do anything except following him in the jungle. To safe time, followers has fenced out a small jungle and herded numbers of hog deer into the jungle for the king to easily hunt hog deers.

The king sometimes went to hunt a hog deer by himself; sometimes he ordered a chef to hunt a hog deer for him. Everytime they were hunted, there was a chaos in hog deers and it was problem for old hog deers, pregnant hog deers, and nursing mother hog deers.

Therefore, Nikroth and Saka agreed that everyday they should alternately select one hog deer from their group and get him or her to wait for being hunted in the appointed area.

One day, it was a turn for a hog deer that was far gone in pregnancy. She begged Saka that let her give a birth to her child before being killed. Saka had rejected her request, so she went to see Nikroth and ask him to save her baby. Nikroth said that he would be a prey for that day instead.

Nikroth went to the appointed area and laid down waiting to be hunted. When the time for hunting had arrived, because Nikroth was a king of hog deer, a chef didn’t dare to shoot him. The chef went back and told the king about this.

After a while, the king came to the jungle and asked Nikroth “Why did you lay down here ?”

Nikroth replied “I’m here because today it’s actually a turn of a pregnant hog deer. She is so pity. I can’t let her to be killed.”

Being sorrowful, the king said “From today, I’ll stop killing animal.” and ordered his followers to free all animals in the jungle.

Saka finally reincarnated as Devadatta. Nikroth finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

Moral: Leaders shouldn’t abandon followers while having a hard time.

In those days, the king of Baranasi had a trip. He fell in love with female wood carrier and made love with her.

Before the king went back to the palace, he gave her a ring, and said “If you get pregnant and have a daughter, sell this ring for a living. If you have a son, bring him with this ring to me. I’ll choose you as the queen.”

The wood carrier finally had a son. When the boy was about five years old, her brought him to see the king at the throne hall.

She said “I brought your son to you as you ordered.”

With shame, the king said “I don’t know anything about this.”

Therefore, she told all the story. However, the king still insisted “This ring is not mine, this boy is not mine also.”

Utterly repressed, she thought that she has no witness or evidence, she had only truth; so she prayed “All gods who are clairvoyant, please be witnesses for me. When I throw the boy into the air; if this boy is not a son of the king, may he fell down and die; if this boy is a son of the king, may he float in the air.” and then throw her son high into the air.

After being thrown, the boy was amazingly sitting in the air. Whoever called, he didn’t come down. The king tried to called the boy, he slowly came down and sat on the king’s lap. Hence, the king accepted that the boy was his son and assigned the boy as the crown prince, and the wood carrier as the queen.

The boy finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

In those days, the king of Baranasi had two sons with the queen. Their names were Prince Mahissasakumara and Prince Chantakumara. After the queen had passed away, he married a new queen and had a new son named Suriyakumara.

At the time new son was born, the king told the queen that she could ask him for anything. The queen asked him to give the throne to her son but the king disagreed with her.

The queen kept asking the king for many times. Unavoidably, the king had to keep his promise. So, he told Mahissasakumara and Chantakumara about this and ordered them to leave the city and come back to reign the throne when he died.

Sawing his brothers leaving the palace sadly, Suriyakumara insist on accompanying with his brothers.

When the three boys went near the Himmapan forest, they had a rest. Suriyakumara was thirsty, so he left his brothers to find some water to drink. Few minutes later, Suriyakumara found a swamp and quickly get into the swamp.

Unfortunately, this swamp was owned by a water demon. This demon was allowed by Wessuwan, the king of ogre, to eat all human who enter the swamp except the one know the Dharma of god.

The water demon appeared and asked Suriyakumara, “Do you know the Dharma of god?”

Suriyakumara answered “Yes, I know. The Dharma of god is the moon and the sun!”

The water demon said that was wrong, so he caught Suriyakumara and imprisoned him.

Thought that Suriyakumara may be lost, Mahissasakumara told Chantakumara to find Suriyakumara.

Chantakumara entered the swamp and was asked the same question. He answered wrong and was caught by the demon also.

Felt that his brothers went too long; Mahissasakumara followed them until he arrived at the swamp. He noticed that there were only footprints that head into the swamp and knew that the swamp must be owned by a water demon.

The water demon transformed into a woodcutter, persuade Mahissakumara to enter the swamp and drink some water. Knew that the woodcutter actually be a water demon, Mahissakumara said “The demon, I know that you have caught my brothers. Where did you imprison my brothers?”

“I keep them in my living place.” the water demon replied.

“Why did you catch my brothers?” Mahissakumara asked.

“I get permission from King Wessuwan that I can eat all human who can’t tell me what the Dharma of god is.” The water demon said.

“If I know what the Dharma of god is, will you release my brothers?” Mahissakumara asked.

“Sure, so tell me what the Dharma of god is” the water demon said.

“Calm nobleman normally has a shame of committing sins, has a fear of committing sins, and persists in moral. Such nobleman has a Dharma of god.” Mahissakumara answered.

The water demon like the answer and release only Chantakumara.
Mahissakumara said “Suriyakumara is my brother of different mother, if I come back with Chantakumara, people will think that I killed Suriyakumara. So that you should release Suriyakumara also.”

Admired by Mahissakumara’s answer, the water demon released Suriyakumara and asked for being a follower of Mahissakumara.

One day, all three brothers heard that the king had died, so they went back to the city with the water demon. At last, Mahissakumara became a king; Chantakumara became a grand regent; Suriyakumara became a prime minister; the water demon became a city guard.

The water demon finally reincarnated as an old monk. Mahissakumara finally reincarnated as the Buddha. Chantakumara finally reincarnated as Saribudra, a famous Buddhist saint. Suriyakumara finally reincarnated as Anon, a famous Buddhist saint.

Long, long time ago, there were two merchants live in the same city, one is wise and one is stupid.

One day, they accidentally have a plan to set their own caravan with five hundred carts to go to the same direction.

While discussing that who should go first, the stupid merchant thought that if he went first, his cows whould have a lot of grass to eat and he could sold the merchandise first, so he told the wise merchant that he want to go first.

In a deep forest, while the stupid merchant was traveling, he found twelve men soaked with water. One of them greeted “Hello merchant, where will you go ?”

“I’ll go that way” the stupid merchant answered.

“It looks like you have a lot of heavy carts, what do such heavy carts contain ?” the stranger asked.

“They contain big jars filled with water.” the stupid merchant answered.

“That’s not needed anymore ! There are a lot of water ahead. Look at us, we are all soaked because it’s always raining here.” the stranger suggested.

The stupid merchant followed the suggestion. He broke all water jars and go ahead. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find any water until the night. He and his followers were very thirsty and exhausted so all of them slept deeply.

All the twelve men are actually ogres disguising as men. They transformed back to ogres and eat the stupid merchant, all his followers, and his cows. Only bones and carts were left.

Fifty days passed, the wise merchant started his caravan also.

In a deep forest, the wise merchant also found twelve men soaked with water. One of them greeted “Hello merchant, where will you go ?”

“I’ll go that way” the wise merchant answered.

“It looks like you have a lot of heavy carts, what do such heavy carts contain ?” the stranger asked.

“They contain jars with water.” the wise merchant answered.

“That’s not needed anymore ! There are a lot of water ahead. Look at us, we are all soaked because it’s always raining here.” the stranger suggested.

“Thank you for your suggestion.” the wise merchant said.

However, the wise merchant didn’t believe the suggestion. He asked his followers “Do anyone of you heard that there are any stream, waterway, or any swamp around here ?”

Followers answered “No, Sir.”

The merchant asked “Therefore, we shouldn’t believe the strangers who told us that there are a lot of water ahead. They may be robbers or ogres. So, we can’t abandon our water.”

The wise merchant continue traveling until the caravan found a lot of bones and all carts of the stupid merchant. Sawing that, the merchant said “Look, those men surely be ogres. We will set camp here, and we need to guard our caravan carefully all night.”

In the morning, they were all safe. The wise merchant ordered his followers to take expensive merchandise from the stupid merchant’s carts and continued traveling. At last, he could sold out all of his merchandise, and came back home safely.

The stupid merchant finally reincarnated as Devadatta. The wise merchant finally reincarnated as the Buddha.

Moral: Think carefully before believe.
